TRIP REPORT: St. Kitts – St. Maarten, April 5 – April 12

This week we had divers from A Diver’s World on board Caribbean Explorer II.  We also welcome back to Dive Instructor and Cook Dave Tunnicliff who is back from spending some time on Turks and Caicos Explorer II.

Caribbean Explorer II started the week at St. Kitts.  All guests arrived on Saturday and the week of diving started on Sunday at Corinthian followed by dives at River Taw.  Monday was also spent at St. Kitts diving at Paradise Reef and Anchors Aweigh.  Several people took the opportunity to explore the beautiful island of St. Kitts on the island tour.  Many marine critters were seen at St. Kitts, highlights included a black seahorse, a red frogfish and a pink frogfish, spotted eels, stingrays, turtles, lobsters and pike blennies.

On Tuesday, Captain Fergi and his crew took the boat to Statia to dive at Barracuda Reef, The Ledges and Double Wreck.  There were many exciting underwater sightings this week at Statia including flying gunnards, stingrays, barracuda, crabs, grunts, goat fish, 2 banded jawfish – one with EGGS – an octopus and turtles.  It is quite rare to see jawfish incubating eggs!  After dinner and the night dive they headed onwards to Saba.  Caribbean Explorer II arrived at Customs House just before 11:00pm and settled in for the night.

The rest of the week was spent exploring the wonders of Saba.  On Wednesday dives were done at Third Encounter, Ladder Lab and Torrens Point.  The first dive on Thursday was done at Tedran Wall, followed by a dive at Tent Wall, and the afternoon and night dives were at Tent Reef.  Several people also took a tour of Saba, and got to experience the memorable “road that couldn’t be built.” The last dives of the week were at Ladder Lab and Torrens Point.  Memorable marine sightings from Saba this week included nurse sharks and reef sharks, another seahorse, turtles, grunts, and decorator crabs.  At 10:00, after the last dive, Caribbean Explorer II headed to St. Maarten and reached St. Maarten around lunchtime.

Average water temperature on Caribbean Explorer II this week was 78F.
